The Bologna Earth Market was the first Italian Earth Market to be organized in a large Italian city, rather than a town. Opened in November 2008, thirty local producers gather wekly in the Porto District of the city to offer wonderful quality fruits and vegetables, cheese, cured meats, bread, beer, street food and much more directly to the customer.
The Porto district is situated within the city walls, in the heart of historic Bologna and takes its name from the Via del Porto - an old access route to the Porto Naviglio, Bologna’s landing point for river traffic. Last century the district was also the site of the Via dello Scalo cattle market. Farmers and producers are thus returning to a venue with historic commercial ties, offering urban residents an opportunity to meet and talk with their rural food providers.
The Bologna Earth Market is organized by the Slow Food Bologna Convivium and Slow Food Emilia Romagna, with the collaboration and support from the Bologna Provincial Authority, the Carisbo Foundation, Cineteca di Bologna, and Bologna City Council – Porto District.
