The fourth Tuscan Earth Market was inaugurated on August 19, 2011 on the island of Elba and is held weekly in Procchio Marciana park, utilizing recently-restored facilities. The market represents an important positive step for the small-scale agriculture and fishing sectors and for the preservation of the island's biodiversity, in the context of a region that has invested most of its resources in tourism in recent years.
The market supports the small-scale farms and producers who continue the island's agricultural and fishing traditions, providing them with a regular space to sell their produce directly to consumers under the supervision and control of Slow Food Tuscany.
Procchio Earth Market is organized by Slow Food Tuscany, the Slow Food Elba e Capraia Convivium and the municipality of Marciana, and has been financed as a part of the Short Supply Chain project promoted by the Region of Tuscany. Slow Food Tuscany is responsible for market management and selecting the participating producers, while the convivium coordinates events connected to the market and supports its organization.
Fifteen producers are involved, from either Elba or one of the other islands of the Tuscan archipelago. They mostly offer fresh fish and fruit and vegetables, as well as preserves, eggs, honey, sweets, olive oil and wine - all belonging to the islands' food traditions. The Slow Food Tuscan Sea Palamita Presidium producers are also present with their products.
