Saturday, August 28, 2010 Slow Food Burgenland inaugurated a farmers' market in Parndorf, the latest candidate to enter the Earth Market network.
Parndorf is a village with about 4.800 citizens in the north of Burgenland county in the east of Austria. The village is situated between Vienna and the borders of Hungary and Slovakia. Because of the Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl - one of the largest steppen-lakes of Europe) and the famous high quality wines of the region, the region welcomes many visitors from all around the world.
Lake Neusiedl area has a very favourable climate for wine, fruit and vegetables production. All the farmers, who have been recommended by Slow Food Burgenland, will come from Parndorf and the surrounding region (radius of maximum 40 km) and offer a big variety of handmade and typical / traditional products of excellent quality; some of them are Bio-Austria or Demeter certified.
Many different products will be presented at the market: fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, meat, cheese and dairy products, honey, vegetable preserves, bread, baked products, pastries, biscuits and cakes, wine, liqueurs and distillates.
The market is supported by the local authorities, and will take place year-round every first Saturday of the month, from 9am to 2pm. The location for the market is a big old, traditional farmers' building that was restored and totally adapted for the requirements of a modern market-site. The building contains a used "state of the art" restaurant-kitchen that will be used for cooking events.
Above all, the market will be a place for personal exchange and communication between consumers and producers but also a social meeting point for the regional population and visitors.
An additional program with cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, art exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts, etc. is planned: everything in context with food, farmers and regional culture, history or traditions. The protagonists will come from Burgenland but also from the neighbouring parts of Hungary and Slovakia.
More future plans will include awareness-building projects for children, like the "school of food and healthy life": children should see and experience where our daily food comes from and how it is produced. The project will also contain small exhibitions and workshops where they can learn how to cook simple, healthy and tasty food.
