The Earth Market project continues to grow with the opening of its twelfth market in Italy, the second in Liguria, which will be inaugurated on Saturday March 26 in Sarzana, in the province of La Spezia.
Sarzana is a town with a population of just over 20,000 in the Val di Magra, the heart of the historical Lunigiana territory. Traditionally a strongly agricultural area, it was long known as "Liguria's vegetable garden".
Starting this market was possible because it is an integral part of the "MareTerra di Liguria," the Fondazione Carige project coordinated by Slow Food Liguria. Special credit must also be given to the work of the Slow Food Sarzana, Lerici and Val di Magra convivia and Slow Food Liguria and the active contribution of the Sarzana municipality (particularly Mayor Massimo Caleo and Councilor Juri Michelucci) and the Italian Farmers' Confederation.
Over 40 food producers are involved in the project, and they come from the historic Lunezia region, which covers all of the Magra valley up to Pontremoli, in Tuscany.
Around 25 Ligurian and Tuscan producers will be present at each market, selling locally caught fish, baked goods, fruit and vegetables, artisanal pasta, honey, cured meats, cheeses, preserves, the extraordinary local olive oils (including oils pressed from Lantesca olives) and wines from grapes native to the Val di Magra. A wood craftsman and producers from the Zeri Lamb, Casola Marocca and Artisan Pontremoli Testarolo Presidia will also be at the market.
The market will be held in Piazza Garibaldi from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.
