Earth Markets Celebrate Slow Food Day

The first Slow Food Day will be this Saturday, June 18, as Slow Food celebrates its 25th birthday with parties in 300 Italian piazzas, organized by convivia and featuring many local food producers. In many cases, Slow Food Day will be celebrated in the local Earth Markets. Read on for more details.

A special edition of the Milan market in Largo Marinai d'Italia will be held from 9 am to 4 pm. Food producers, the public and association members can listen to songs in dialect and Italian in the Folk Music Corner and hear poetry from Giancarlo Majorino and other young poets. They'll also be able to meet the Palestinian food community from Ramallah and other friends of Slow Food from the worlds of culture, art, film and theatre.
The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity will be present with Slow Food Presidia, tastings, workshops and toasts, culminating in a final toast at 1 pm with all the producers and friends of the Earth Market.

In Montevarchi, near Arezzo in Tuscany, Slow Food Valdarno will be celebrating with the Earth Market in Piazza dell'Antica Gora from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm. Meetings and talks will describe the association's projects and help raise funds for the Thousand Gardens in Africa.

In San Miniato, near Pisa, the convivium will begin celebrations for Slow Food's 25th birthday at 6 pm in the Piazzetta del Fondo, with producers from the Earth Market and the Mallegato Presidium. The Slow Food manifesto in defense of Italian olive-growing will also be presented, and the headquarters of the Slow Food San Miniato Convivium, shared with the San Miniato Vignerons' Association, will be inaugurated with a tasting of local wines.

The Ciampino Earth Market will move location on June 18 to Albano Laziale, in Piazza San Pietro. It will run from 5 pm to midnight, with some of the market's regular producers and a presentation of produce grown in the garden of the Fontanile Anagnino school in Morena. The celebrations will continue the next day at the market's usual location in Via Mario Calò in Ciampino.

As part of the celebrations in Bologna, the Earth Market will be held from 9 am to 2 pm in Via Azzo Gardino, followed by an Eat-In open to everyone, with the market producers.

In Sarzana, in Liguria, a special edition of the market in Piazza Matteotti will feature a speakers' corner, where teachers from Slow Food Italy's school gardens projects, Master of Food instructors and local producers will take turns to talk with the public.

In Cervignano del Friuli, near Udine, the Aquileia Earth Market will celebrate in Piazza Indipendenza with music and tastings, concluding with a toast to celebrate the association's 25 years.

For June 18 only, the Vallargarina Earth Market will move to the center of Rovereto, in Trentino. Alongside the producers and their stalls will be a workshop for children, a Slow Food stand where people can find out more about the Slow Food world and become members and a screening of the film about Terra Madre Trentino.

The Earth Market in Umbertide, in Perugia, Umbria, will run from 8 am to 1 pm in Piazza Matteotti and will feature wine and oil producers, cheesemakers, fruit and vegetable growers and honey producers, as well as ceramic and textile artisans, Slow Food Presidia and the Umbrian Terra Madre communities.

Special editions of the local Earth Markets will be held in Alba and Calamadrana, in Piedmont, on June 18 and in Colorno (Emilia-Romagna), near Rome, on June 19.
